Hourly rate calculator for contractors

Most people set their rate by asking what the person down the road charges. That tells you what they are willing to accept, not what you need. This works backwards from the money you actually want to keep.

This is break-even on your own target, before profit. Anything you want left over on top of your wage goes on above this number.

Questions people ask

Why does the billable percentage matter so much?

Because driving, quoting, ordering and invoicing are hours you work and nobody pays for. If only 65% of your hours are billable, the other 35% have to be paid for by the rate on the ones that are.

Should profit be in the income figure?

Treat the income box as your wage. Anything you want left in the business on top of that goes on above the number this gives you.

Is my answer stored anywhere?
